Dressing Down

I've come to the realization that I don't really like to dress down anymore. It seems I've left those college couture days behind me. Below is my definition of dressing down. Simple yet stylish and of course adding those accessories to give it a little bling.

Just a touch of Pink

When it comes to my winter wardrobe, it contains a lot of black.  I love it because it's slimming and adds a striking contrast to my fair skin tone and hair color. The best part of black, it goes with anything  (even brown).  Just add a bright color to a black foundation and  you have a chic and classic combination that even Audrey Hepburn would love.

Gold and Neutral

Yesterday I finally got my new neutral sweater in. It's soft, comfy, and a perfect staple for so many outfits. This is my first attempt with a dolman style top. I wasn't sure if it would fit my body type and I'm happy to report it does. I love the longer length in the back and the loose fitting sleeves. It hits right below the top of my jeans so you can show off a cute skinny belt.  Today I just added a little bit of gold to make it shine. This will probably be one of many posts you see with this sweater.

Holiday Lace

Today Starbucks decorated their stores with Christmas Cheer. It seemed fitting that I wore a bit of red today (although I swear I didn't plan it that way).  I wanted to wear my new lace shirt that I FINALLY found! I've literally been looking for a lace shirt since September. I was so exited when I found my new wardrobe staple at Forever21 and on sale! Lace tops makes anything girly. You can wear it with almost any sort of bottoms, over dresses, and sparkly tanks. It's perfect for the holidays.

Bit of Sparkle

Wednesdays always seem a bit dull. It's hump day and you are starting to get excited for the weekend. A little bit of sparkle and shine to your outfit can give light to your day (and hopefully make it go by faster).

Black Friday

It's Friday. Not exactly Thanksgiving yet, but getting close. I feel sorry for the Thanksgiving holiday, it seems retailers have overshadowed it with Christmas. However yesterday felt like Black Friday to me. I was finally able to find the perfect off the shoulder sweater and boots which I purchased BOTH for 23.00. It was a good day.

Comfy Layers

Today's post is inspired by Jennifer Aniston. I love her casual and comfy looks. With it getting colder, layering is my friend. This assemble put me out of my comfort zone. Rolled jeans with tan suede boots and a black blazer? Never would of tried it before, but today I'm rocking it. The floral tank top gives it a feminine touch while the grey hoodie softens the look.

Lucky Red

Today is game 6 of the World Series. It's Texas vs. St. Louis. I am and will always be a Seattle Mariners fan first. However, my second favorite team has always been the Texas Rangers. I don't know if it's because many of the M's players have played for them, their passion for the game of baseball, or how they were always the underdog and have now made their way to the top. Regardless, come post-season I'm rooting for the Rangers (since the M's have seem to make it their life goal to be one of the two teams who have never made it to the World Series).

This last summer, I was lucky enough to watch the Rangers play in Texas. Although it was over a 100 degrees most of the game and I had to be exposed to ALOT of Texas pride, it was one of the best games I've ever been to. Texas was down in the bottom of the 9th when Josh Hamilton came to bat and hit a home run, winning the game. That day I was wearing my red tank top. I haven't worn it since because in WA it's never 100+ degrees. Today I decide that it could be my lucky top. I paired it with a cream cardi, jeans, and the ever comfortable Toms. Making it acceptable for the 41 degree Seattle fall weather.

Good luck Rangers! Here's to your first World Series win EVER! (And then please teach the M's how you did it)

Fitness Couture

Today I added a new workout routine; walking. I am not a morning person. I don't have the energy to run before 9am, so I decided to walk. It's better than lying in bed and then I can do my runs and yoga in the evening when I have more energy. Sometimes it's better to start things off slow. This morning it was raining, but I still enjoyed my brisk stroll. Being fashionable is now trending to active wear. I'm loving the styles Nike, Lululemon, and others are creating.  My new wish list consists of workout items that can easily go from the gym to the street. Here are my top 2 versatile items:
Lululemon Scuba Jacket. Warm enough for a morning walk , but cute enough for the weekend movies.
Zella "Live-In" Leggings. Perfect for long runs and  for under skirts or dresses when you need that extra warmth.

Night out with Crush

Last night, myself and my two besties went to Seattle Restaurant Week at Crush. One of us had been waiting 5 years to try this restaurant and through her lucky stars, she ended up working with the head Chef at Crush. The experience at Crush was one of the best dining experiences I've ever had. We received excellent wine and off-menu items compliments of the Chef and Pastry Chef. Everything we tried was savory and exquisite. It ranged from Douglas Fir Sorbet to Peppercorn Roasted Flat Iron Steak to Crisp Berkshire Port Belly (just to name a few items of our 6-course meal). I can't even begin to describe how incredible Crush is. It is somewhere that needs to be experienced to truly appreciate. (http://www.chefjasonwilson.com/).

Because of this grand occasion, we decided to dress up a bit. One of the many things I love about my gorgeous friends is their own style. When it comes to going out on the town, we have our preferences and looks that set us apart from the rest. Below you can see our dinning couture (and good luck guessing who is who!)

Floral Fall

With temperatures reaching mid 60's this week, a heavy sweater wouldn't do. Having an open knit sweater is great for layering and adding a subtle background canvas for printed scarves.

Blush Vintage

My dear friends and I went exquisite wine tasting last weekend. We explored the Wenatchee Valley and sipped on some of the best wine I've ever had. Exploring all the local wineries was such an intimate experience. We met the wine makers, toured the cellars, and even danced to a local band. The weather was absolutely perfect! Mid 60's, sunny, and a hint of fall crispness. I took advantage of the weekend to try some new assembles. They both turned out lovely, although next time wear flats when wine tasting. You tend to do a lot of walking through uneven ground and steps, plus after 8 wineries you won't be very stable in heels.

Here is a list of the local wineries we visited:
http://www.beaumontcellars.com/ :The Rose was my favorite
http://www.whiteheronwine.com/ : We all ended up buying a bottle of the Roussane
http://www.fairelepont.com/ : Tre Amore Red blend is fantastic
http://www.malagaspringswinery.com/: One of the best wineries, ideal red wines, good blends, and unlimited tasting. The owner (who looks like Robert Redford) shared many details of his wines and we had an excellent time.
http://www.baronesscellars.com/: Their Port is smooth and unique. A must is their Engelwein White Gluhwien, it can be served hot for the winter months.

Today's Outfit: Leather and Flannel

Living in the Pacific Northwest, you will see lots of flannel. It's easy to turn this into a cute casual look by just adding leather. Pairing flannel with leather and heels gives it a trendy style that easily transfers it from the woods to downtown.

Tuesday's Treat!

Now that it's fall, we are back to our MNF get togethers. Each week is a theme, last  night was Pizza. Someone mentioned the idea of having a dessert pizza, so I quickly threw one together from what I had at home. This is a very simple dessert that tastes oh so good.

Recipe:
  • Pre-made pizza crust (plain)
  • Nutella
  • Chocolate Toppings of your choice

Cook pizza crust as listed on package
Remove from oven and while crust is still hot, spread Nutella evenly over the crust
Add chocolate toppings (I used Hershey Bars and Reeses PB Cups)
Place the dessert pizza back in oven for a few minutes to allow chocolate to melt a little.
Remove and let cool.

Friday Travel Observations: China

China will always be one of my favorite places in the world. Some of the most generous, intelligent, and giving people reside there. Each city brings its own uniqueness to the Chinese culture. Every place you visit tradition encompasses you and  you can't help but to rediscover yourself. China is so completely different from the westernized life most of us know. It actually requires you to think and behave in a new manner. China is always a beautiful new discovery.

I've been to Xi'an, Beijing, Nanjing, and my second favorite city in the entire world, Shanghai. Throughout my travels these are my observations:

  1. Americans are their fascination. So don't be alarmed if they ask for your picture, laugh at you using chopsticks, or think your life is like Gossip Girl. Just smile and try unsuccessfully to convince them otherwise.
  2. There is no comparison anywhere outside of China for their food. Other cultures can try, but fail miserably. While in China, do not eat anything besides their food and you won't regret it (China McD's doesn't count as Chinese food).
  3. Always use chopsticks (even if you feel like a fool, you will be a larger one when you don't).
  4. Being a pedestrian is life-threatening. For the large intersections, cross only when it says or you will get smashed. Also pedestrian sidewalks are not safe, always be on the look out for small motor vehicles.
  5. Don't wear a seat belt, it offends them. And yes you will be risking your life.
  6. Negotiate when buying market items. They will start you off at $1100 yuan and you can easily get it down to $300 yuan (or cheaper if you are good). If you are with a local = bigger discount. If you pretend to be married to a local = you're golden!
  7. Don't ask what you are eating if you don't know. Most of the time it's better not knowing (yes, Frog Ovaries are delicious)
  8. Sing Karaoke. Best. experience. ever.
  9. Walk Shanghai. Don't take a taxi. You can easily get from the Bund district, to the shopping district within an hour's walk. You discover so much more. Truly appreciate the architecture there, it's astounding.
  10. Although the Terracotta Warriors are the main tourist attraction in Xi'an, you need to also visit the Imperial Hot Springs. The Imperial Hot Springs are by far my favorite tourist site in all of China (beating out the Imperial Palace and Great Wall). I believe the word beautiful was derived there. They are enchanting.
  11. Learn how to say Hello, Thank You, numbers 1-3, and a pick up line in Chinese. They will love you for it.
  12. Always have napkins or toilet paper with you at all times. Most restrooms lack these.
  13. Nail the peace sign pose.
  14. Understand you will be overwhelmed by the tradition and history, but learn as much as possible.
  15. Observe the people. Learn their intricate ways of respect, love, and wisdom. You will be a better person because of it.

Back in the Saddle Again

I don't know if it was inspiration from yesterday's outfit (see below) or because the sun was shining, but I'm back to my regular workout routine.  You might say I took a temporarily leave from working out most of September. Yesterday while on my run, I realized how much I missed it and it's boost of good feelings. So now I'm back to my 5-6x a week fitness schedule. Have to be in shape for all those adorable fall fashions!

In speaking of fashion, the staple item of your wardrobe should be the plain white button up shirt (I have 3). This is a timeless piece that can go from jeans to skirts, heels to boots. Absolute must for any closet.
Also gold nail polish is subtle but stunning for fall. It gives you just enough glitz to brighten any outfit.

Wednesday's Wish

My latest outfit creation I'm lusting over. I have the sweater, now just to get the maxi dress, Kate Spade purse, and Tom wedges...doesn't this just exclaim Fall?!? However lusting is all I can do.... I'll need a second job to obtain this ensemble.

Grey Skies

Grey Skies

Grey Skies by taffetaandtaste

Here's my outfit for today. Perfect for a rainy Seattle.

Transformed

Last night I had dinner with friends from college. They are dear acquaintances and I haven't seen much of them since graduation. We had a wonderful time reminiscing about our dorm room days. As we got up to leave, someone made a comment on how cute my outfit was, then another remark was thrown on how much of a difference it was from my hoodie, bball shorts, and jeans college attire.  Which made me think...did I really dress that bad in college?

I realized sadly, it was true. Although by my senior year I had developed a  bit more fashion sense, I was still a long ways off from where I am today. I remember coming in my freshmen year and my dorm mates trying to put me in skirts and dresses. I will admit my college motif was comfort over couture. I loved my hoodies, loose jeans, and converses. I would also have my sport-centric lounge wear when I was just inside procrastinating on a paper. Although now I'm wearing 4in heels, day dresses, and have accessories like crazy, I will always love my staple of converses, jeans, and hoodies (you'll still see it time to time).

So what caused the change? Honestly, it probably started a year and a half ago. It was when I was really starting to run more (competing with someone helps). I was losing weight and therefore was more inclined to buy cute (tighter!) outfits. I felt that I no longer needed to cover up with oversize hoodies. Then it became a hobby of buying and trying the latest trends (within reason) and creating outfits. Honestly, I found my confidence. No matter what your size or type, if you have confidence, you can pull anything off.

It's amazing how great it is to buy clothes and know I look good in them! Things I've wanted to wear forever, I can now wear. This was my a year of firsts. My first bikini this summer and now with fall/winter I'll finally be wearing sweaters and not hoodies.

So treat  your body well, exercise, and be confident in the beauty you have. The possibilities can be endless.

The Power of Voice

I lost my voice today. This morning it was a low, husky, sexy sound and I'm sure all the guys in my 30min meeting enjoyed it. By this afternoon, nada. I just cancelled two meetings because I could barely whisper a word. Incredible how much is done purely based on communication. It does create a humorous day and makes me very thankful that I can usually talk.

It also helps put into perspective how vital a voice can be. Think about everyday interactions. How many times did a compliment make your entire day or even week? Or the opposite, how one word can destroy so much.

I truly enjoy analyzing speeches (nerd points for my pastime..I know). One of my favorite speeches of all time is Barbara Bush's Wellesly Commencement Speech. It was given in 1990. If you have not heard this speech, I highly recommend you listen to it. It's flawless.
Text here: http://www.wellesley.edu/PublicAffairs/Commencement/1990/bush.ht
Video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxhuPIzOIfc

I encourage everyone to listen, analyze, and study powerful speeches. It is truly astounding how someone with just words can spark a movement, soothe the mourning, and rally a nation. Watch their movements, expressions, and truly listen to what they are saying.

Located here: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/top100speechesall.html  is what to be considered the top 100 speeches of all time. They are truly inspiring and are still just as powerful now as they were when spoken.

Travel Lust....

Today I'm daydreaming of far away places. I haven't been on a plane since July. To me, 2 months of not traveling is agonizing. I have no idea where my travel lust came from, all I know it's not necessarily a good thing. To clarify, I suffer from travel lust, not wonder lust. I love having a home base to return to. The anticipation of returning home is all part of  the lure.

I thrive on airports, new sights, sounds, tastes, seeing friends or  making new ones abroad. Lately I find myself looking at pictures of France, Shanghai, Norway, and Ireland. Places I'm dying to visit or return to. I wish I had the means to work 10 months of the year and then take off 2 months to travel. Completely ideal to me.

Currently, my next trip isn't until November. I'm ecstatic to see Boston in the fall and fly with new travel buddies. I might have to sneak a trip to San Diego or Utah in next month though to help tame this traveling lust.

Do any of you suffer as I do?

Friday Travel Observations: Texas

Throughout my trips I write down numerous travel observations in my lil' notebook. Each Friday I'll post a new place.
Disclaimer: These are purely observations, they may or may not be entirely accurate and are not intended to belittle anyone or anyplace.

This week's observation is from my most recent visit to Austin, TX! I instantly fell in love with the city. It has the same atmosphere and feel as Seattle (just mucho hotter). Great food, 6th Street is full of crazy new experiences, and the people are not as "Texy" as the rest of the state. Plenty to do in this lovely and weird city.
However these observations are based on the Great State of Texas and not just Austin alone:

  • Roadkill is everywhere, it's practically a dead zoo.
  • Texans love to bling out their vehicles
  • Texans most coveted parking space in not the closest spot to the entrance, but the one with the most shade.
  • In Texas, pedestrians do not have the right-a-way on a free red light (even if it says WALK). If they hit you just sue them for their Ranch.
  • Even the restaurant a/c is too cold for locals.
  • They take their salsa seriously..very seriously.
  • You will be told welcome to Texas within 10min of getting off the plane from a local (not the airline). Apparently they can sense if you are not from their homeland.
  • Cowboys, beer, inner tubes, and a river is the thing to do.
  • Austin maybe weird, but it's the most normal city in Texas.

Downsizing

Today I'm downsizing quite a few things. First, I'm downsizing how much I spend on frivolous things a month. It's time to create a real budget and stick with it! I have two friends who are doing this with me for accountability. We have a spreadsheet and everything. I even canceled my cable bill, downgraded Netflix, and removed a few other unnecessary expenditures as well.

Secondly, I'm downsizing my closet. With my recent weight loss (and hopefully continuing loss) some of my clothes do not fit anymore (yay). Also with another summer season almost done I'm removing any of my summer clothes I haven't worn in the last year. Going through  my closet is always hard. I create an emotional attachment to some of my clothes and especially my shoes. However, it's time to move on. Come September 1st I'm staring new again. Getting rid of the superfluous within my life. This covers weight, spending, clothes, everything!

Bonne chance à moi!

Fashion Addiction

Sometimes I wonder what is more important...groceries or fashion. Julep (http://www.julep.com/) just introduced their new Maven monthly subscription. Every month they will send you the latest nail polish colors and hand care systems. I'm so excited for this! I'll probably have to wait till next month to join....but right now I'm thinking that is more important than getting food.

Fashion is addicting. If you asked me 5 or 6 years ago what I thought of designer purses, seasonal nail polish, latest trends, I would of told you I like the idea of it, but probably something not for me. Alas, I've been reformed. Fashion has become my new hobby...my new semi-expensive hobby.  For the most part, I'm good. I'm not starving myself or sitting in the dark because I would of rather had those cute Jessica Simpson heels than pay the bills. I look for deals (paying $120 for a $380 dollar purse) or work with what I have. Sadly though...my self-restraint has not lasted on occasion and I find myself on a bit tighter budget for the month. However, I would say that those new skinny jeans and sweater for this fall were worth it.

What is your moolah addiction? What do you do that all your extra money goes to and you would sometimes rather do that than eat? I find it fascinating how we can negotiate with ourselves on what our needs and wants are. So for now, I'll pass on my new monthly membership to Julep and spend my money more wisely on food substance. Next month though...hmm I really don't need cable right? (Imagine my shoe collection with that!!)

Weekend Creativity

I absolutely love weekends. Two days away from our jobs and sometimes reality. Weekends are created to reinvigorate ourselves (or are supposed to). This weekend for me is a whirlwind of driving, nephews, friends, and sun.

Another highlight of the weekend is experimenting with outfits. During the week I'm too much in a hurry to put something new together. I tend to wear something that I've done before. Weekends  I try different combinations, research the latest styles, and create something new.

I've already started a fall look book of different outfits. It includes items I have, need, and want. If I love an outfit I've worn, I write it down. I also look at websites or blogs for outfits and ideas.  Hopefully as I improve my blogging skills, my look book will make its way to Taffeta and Taste.

Here is your challenge. This weekend create an outfit that you have never worn before. Be creative with combining items you already have and create a brand new combination out of them. If you need inspiration here are a few of my favorite sites:

Enjoy your weekend!

Fall is in the air (too soon!)

Currently I'm sitting at my desk with my mini heater running (shhhh don't tell anyone, I think it's against company policy to have one.. something about it being a fire hazard) I have my sweater on and through my window it's cloudy and grey. My blooming  jasmine tea adds the final touch to this scenery. I'm warm and cozy, but the problem with all of this, it's August. Lately my mornings reflect what a typical October day should be! Where did summer go? I believe I've seen a week of it so far. Next week brings the rain and lower temperatures back and therefore I'm tempted to bring out the fall fashions.

I've been withholding, desperately trying to wear my summer clothes, but regretting it almost immediately as I step outside. The stores are now displaying the latest fall fashions as well as the magazines, but I still cling to idealistic notion that I have till end of September before it's time to restock my closet.

I however, have been keeping an eye out for my fall fashion wish list and compiling my look-book (hopefully this will sustain me until October). The following are a few must haves:

1. Blazers, blazers, blazers.
2. Heeled booties
3. Legging jeans (incredibly happy these are still in fashion)
4. Blush tone sweaters
5. Plaid

Friendship

This weekend provided many incidents where I had to reflect on friendship and what it truly means to me. I've been beyond blessed and incredibly lucky with who my friends are. My friends are my everything. By nature I'm a very loyal person and would do about anything for someone who is close to me.

It takes quite a bit to lose my respect. One way to do it is to hurt one of my friends. I find it very difficult to have respect for someone that knowingly hurts other people. I can forgive, but very hesitant to give second chances.  I hope though, that I am never blinded by loyalty and wanting to protect my friend that I'm purposefully rude or withhold the possibility of reconciliation. I do believe reconciliation is a possibility if both sides are in mutual agreement and the wrong doings have been made right. It will probably never be the same, but over time wounds can heal.

Recently I've been on both sides of this. I've had to reacquaint myself with someone who hurt people I care about and I've also been the person that was hurt. I wanted so much to protect my friends from this certain individual. I wanted to be a barrier and refuse to let this individual even talk to them. However, I was surprised by the maturity and vulnerability this situation provided. We were all able to handle the situation cordially and as adults. I was so immensely proud of my friends. I was also relived by the maturity of the one who I felt was in the wrong. It definitely made me evaluate my feelings toward the situation.  Who knows if there will be reconciliation, but it's nice to know that we are able to meet and put our feelings aside for the sake of each other.

When it comes to myself, I'm less protective. I sometimes will have a skewed view over a situation and dismiss it too easily. This past weekend, it's been amazing to see the support I've had from my friends. I feel so loved that my friends are protective of me and truly hate to see any of us hurt. I realize that true friends will protect, love, and do what is best for you. Sometimes that includes them calling you out on situations or playing devils advocate so you see both sides. This helps me realize my self-worth even more.

This is my HUGE thanks for those who've always been there when I've needed them. To make me laugh, forget, pray, and get me through so many situations in life (good and bad). Obviously it's easy to be there when the times are good, but you have always been there when it gets hard. Love you so much and know that I hope to NEVER take any of you for granted.

Reflection

How much different would life be if you didn't make excuses? That you took advantage of every moment and lived it to its fullest? Why are we so afraid of life sometimes? What is it that holds us back from going for what we truly want. Is it the fear of rejection or failure? The fear of maintaining our image and what others think of us? This is what I've been reflecting on this past week.

Last weekend a 9 year old girl passed away in a horrific car accident. Days before the accident she gave up her birthday to raise money for Charity: Water. Her goal was $300. She fell short $80. Our pastor put in a request to reopen her campaign so her goal could be fulfilled. As of today, in her memory, she has raised over $624,000. (http://mycharitywater.org/p/campaign?campaign_id=16396) This little girl in her selflessness, started something so substantial that it has reach all over the world. CNN, MSN, and many more have covered her story. People from all walks of life have donated to her cause. She is giving hope to literally thousands of people.

As a 9 year old, she had life already figured out. She understood a need and gave everything she had for it. She wasn't influenced by the world and its twisted ideals. She knew she loved Jesus, she knew that people needed clean water. She has achieved something that is far larger than all of us and made a change in the world.

How many of us can say that about our lives? What is holding back for seeing something and achieving it? Because of her story and the constant reminder of how short life really is, I'm going to try my hardest not to hold back. I want to live a life that can be at least a fraction as insightful as Rachel's was. We don't get another chance at life. We need to make it the best it can possibly be, help those in need, and don't be afraid to go for what we truly want. It is better to fail than to regret. I want to have no regrets. I want to make the most of this opportunity God has given me. May my pride be forgotten and may I live to his standards and no one else's.

And you had everything to lose

Starting New

After reaching my previous goal, I was faced with the decision to quit blogging or to start anew. Although I'm completely unfaithful to writing, I believe it's crucial for discovery. It challenges your intellect, creativity, and sensibility. I have a friend who is astounding at writing blogs. She encompasses the saying, "bringing words to life" I find it truly inspirational.

So this is my attempt to write about life and its mishaps and glories.

To keep this simple, I'll start with the title of the blog. The title is always the hardest part. You want to it to grab the readers attention, to reflect the content, and be catchy so when it becomes famous, people remember it.
Although I have no intentions of becoming famous (my spelling and grammar errors will never allow that to happen) I wanted a title that was short, sweet, and me.

Taffeta is defined as: A crisp, smooth, plain-woven fabric with a slight sheen, made of various fibers. This is what I want my blog to be: crisp in thought, smooth with words, a little transparent of all the fibers creating it. Plus I simply adore taffeta (just ask the brides whose weddings I've been in)

As for taste, this covers the rest. My blog will talk about food, fitness, traveling, and life in general. Taste can be applied to all the above and it sounds great with Taffeta. I'm not a complicated person.

Enjoy readers!  Like what you want, hate what you want. It doesn't make a difference to me. Now if I can only figure out how to make my font black and not purple.....

Goal Accomplished!

Alright followers, I can proudly announce that I wore my bikini and.....LOVED IT!! I'm officially hooked on wearing one. It felt so good that I accomplished my goal. The best part? My lifestyle became much healthier these last few months and I don't want to change it. Currently I'm only 12lbs away from my weight when I was 16 years old. So that's the new goal! Thanks to everyone for all the support and encouragement! Sadly I didn't get a picture when I was in Texas..water and cameras don't mix. I'll still post one when I get the chance to get a pic.

#1 Rule of Bikini Fittings

#1 Rule of trying to find the right bikini: NEVER try one on by yourself. I'm guilty of doing just that. I tried on countless bikini's, spent the moolah, and kept thinking that I looked horrible. It wasn't until my bestie came over and told me differently. Your bikini approval buddy should encompass the following traits:

  1. Honesty: They are not afraid to tell you if you look hideous, or if it isn't the right fit
  2. Knows body types: They know what type of swimsuit you should wear to flatter your figure. They won't let you wear something that shows the "girls" off to the world. :)
  3. Compliments: We are all guilty of fishing for these, but you need someone who gives them when they are deserved and not just for the sake of being nice.
  4. Knows you: Makes you give her all your other swimsuits, so you have no choice but to pack the bikini.

So thanks Brown Rice! Because of her, I'm packing a bikini for Texas. I"ll make sure to upload a picture when I return.

I will say that I am soooooo proud of myself. I'm going to wear a bikini!! Also I was getting all my other vaca outfits together (mostly tank tops and shorts) and was giddy on how well I looked. It's this that keeps my motivation going. Just because I reached my goal, doesn't mean I'm going to stop. I have to maintain my success and head for the next race (so watch out strapless bridesmaid dress)

P.S.  A bikini wax hurts like @#$%& !!! But worth it.

Frustrated!!!!

Today I had bikini #2 arrive and I didn't like the way it looked at all! I really think I don't have the body type for it or more honestly, my body is not there yet. I've been working so hard! The running, abs, yoga, dieting..and still I'm not able to look good in one. Just a bad day. I still have 3 days left which I doubt will change anything, but it looks like a tankini for Texas...all well. I guess I still have a few summer months left to get into a bikini. Not giving up, but so incredibly frustrated!

Bikini Search Frustration!

Today I ordered another bikini. The first one I ordered just didn't work. Which raises the question...do I even have a bikini body type? I have a short torso and large chest and it makes it so frustrating trying to find a bikini!  Attempt #3 is a retro bikini. Hopefully this style fits my body type. Less than two weeks remain until Texas. I'm scrambling trying to get everything ready. This is my one and only summer vaca and I'm going to make it unforgettable.

Right now the temperature looks like it's going to be in the 100's in Austin. I'll be living in shorts, tanktops, and a few sun dresses here and there. It's the final countdown to make sure my legs, arms, and abs are getting toned! It's the last stretch of the race!!! I've worked so hard and I've seen much improvement, but I'm still not quite there yet. Time to start doubling the workouts and miles!

Pain is Gain

Day 2 after soccer and I'm still so sore! Soccer is definitely a rigorous workout. The average mid fielder runs 6 miles in 90 minutes. I loved every second of it though! I can't wait till our next match on Wednesday! I'm still rusty (I haven't really played in the last 5 years) and most of my team is guys. I have to keep reminding myself they will run faster and kick harder than me. :)

I'm really excited that I can add soccer to my workout regime. It is so important to add variety. If you do the same thing over and over again, you will get less results. Adding variety makes it fun, challenging, and able to achieve your goal faster.

Tonight I have to do miles. Amazing how your body is sore, but  yet  you can still make yourself push through it and go further. I have to admit I love being sore. It means I gave my body a wicked workout. Pain is Gain.

Mid Afternoon Munchies

Ugh, it's a little after 3pm and I'm craving chocolate..or something sweet. Instead I'm eating my handful of almonds. You think that I would be proud of myself for eating a healthy snack instead of a candy bar, but nope, I feel unfulfilled. I think the almonds are just making me hungrier.
It's still astounds me how being is shape is hard to do! It's expensive, time consuming, and inconvenient. No wonder why most of America is fat.
But then I catch myself in the mirror and see how cute my new dress looks on my slimmed down body. I smile and think...maybe it's worth the hassle. I feel better, look better, and am just happier.
So I'll continue to eat my almonds and maybe tomorrow add some strawberries for that little bit of sugar rush.
Yay for being healthy.

Lastly, just a little nervous of starting co-ed soccer tonight. I haven't played in such a long time and I have a crappy knee. But it's for the social interaction and exercise right? Yay for getting out there and doing something I love. Fingers are crossed for a cute teammate. :) Let you all know how it goes tomorrow.

Semi-Success!

Woot! Working out while being in Cali was a success! (The title mentions semi-success because I haven't fully reached my goal yet.) I ran over 10 miles, biked over 8, did yoga and walked miles upon miles in L.A. My goal for June is 35 miles, I'm already at 20! Looks like I might have to increase the mileage.

Working out in SoCal is much easier than here.  Running along the beach, in the warm sun, with gorgeous views (the guys are included in that...WOW) Biking on trails to a cute restaurant or yoga studio...all so easy. I wanted to get up every morning and run. I couldn't wait. I now understand why those Cali girls are so skinny. Being near the beach boosted my determination though! In a few weeks I'll hopefully be sporting my bikini.

This week I'm trying out a local yoga studio. In addition to running and Abs, hopefully these next 3 weeks will be  the last little bit I need before heading to Texas. Oh and  my co-ed soccer team starts Wednesday. Fingers crossed that I won't be injured out there on the field :) A knee brace does not look sexy with a bathing suit.

National Running Day!!!

Okay people! Get your butt out there and run! I don't care if you have never ran a day in your life. Run one block or 6 miles. Just do it.

It's GO time

I officially have 4 weeks till Texas. I'm feeling the pressure. It's the last stretch of the race, so I have to step it up! I made my goal of 30 miles for May (thanks Ashley), but now I have to run even longer and do Abs EVERY DAY. It's also time to really stick to my calorie count and eating right.

This next week is going to be a challenge. I'll be in California visiting my brother and also at a work conference. I have work out videos on my iPad ready to go. I'm determined to go running at the hotel gym in the morning and I'm forcing my brother to do activities that can also count as workouts. So far on the list, bike riding along the beach and kayaking in the bay. Also at the conference I'll be walking around A LOT, but I have to make sure my dinners and lunches are healthy. It's California, so it's possible. Traveling and keeping your workout/diet routine is hard, but if others can do it, I can as well.

For June, my miles have been increased to 35 for the month. I need to add a bit of a arm workout a few nights a week as well. Now if the sun would just come out, it would make things easier.

Here comes the final stretch! I'm determined to make it.

Why I Run

I've been slacking on my posts because I've been slacking on my routine. These last two days I ate horrible food and didn't work out as well. Of course now it's the 3 day weekend and I'm heading out of town. I am however brining my running gear. I'm heading out to Cathlamet to stay at my grandpa's.

It's probably there where I developed my love-hate relationship with running. The summer between my freshmen and sophomore year in college I went to stay with my grandma who was in the process of being treated for cancer. My grandpa was in Alaska taking a much needed break. That summer was one of the hardest moments of my life. I had to watch someone I loved more than anything become a person I barely knew (the chemo was causing horrible side effects). My grandparent's place is in a very remote area, there are barely any neighbors and the nearest grocery store is 30min away. I had no friends nearby and of course no internet or cell phone reception. It was difficult. It was that summer I began to run. Every morning I would get up, check on my grandma, grab my discman (that's right, it was before iPods) and go running. I would run along a remote country road. Either side was line by forests and you would never see any signs of another human being. It was on those runs I would let my emotions and hardships go. It was my way of starting the day fresh and ready to deal with whatever was going to happen. It was because of those runs that I was able to make it through that summer.

Tomorrow it will be 5 years since my grandma passed away and it's still painful. I miss her so much. I know tomorrow morning that I'll get up and run that country road which was my escape. I'll run to where we laid her ashes and say a prayer of gratitude that I was so incredibly lucky to have her in my life. This time when I run, it's not to escape the pain, but to celebrate a life.

Driven by Technology

I've sadly realized that without technology, I would not be as inclined to workout. Heaven forbid I leave the house without my iPhone. In fact, I probably wouldn't do a run without it. My iPhone contains the most essential part of my run...the playlist. My music keeps me going. It's my escape from whatever is going on that day and I run just to hear what song will pop up next. Also important is my Runkeeper app (http://runkeeper.com) It keeps track of all  my runs, times, and routes that I've been on. It lets me know how much I've ran each month and gives me cool rewards for each achievement I do. Another cool feature on it is my street team. It allows me to run with friends thousands of miles away.  I can compete with others to see how many miles they've run, etc. (Ashley if you are reading this...I only have 10 miles left for this month!!)

It's technology that drives my run and appeals to my need for music and competition. Without it, I wouldn't be able to do as much.
